Fishing Reels There are four major types of fishing reels: fly cast, bait cast, spin cast and spinning. Spinning reels are the most popular and are easy to use. Spin casting reels are hybrids of spinning reels and bait casting reels and have a cover that helps keep the line from tangling. The line pays out through a hole in the cover. Both spinning and spin casting reels mount under the rods handle. Bait casting reels mount above the rods handle and retrieve the line onto a revolving spool. These rods work well for bigger fish, salt water fishing and offshore fishing. Fly fishing tackle reels depend on the weight of the line, not the weight of a lure and sinker, to get a lightweight lure out over the water. These reels are designed to accommodate thicker, heavier fishing line and have few mechanical parts.
Consider this: its a bright sunny day with very little wind in mid afternoon, therefore youre focusing your efforts in somewhat deeper water where the bass will be to get away from the heat and brightness of the sun. Youre trolling a crankbait on a spincast rod and reel with moderate success when the weather suddenly changes. It turns cloudy, the wind picks up and all of the sudden youre not getting any strikes. Instead of spending 15 minutes setting up a Carolina rig to fish the shallows with, you just grab your baitcaster with the rig already set up and go. Say your Carolina rig isnt getting results and you want to try a top water popper, you can just take that crankbait off your spinning rod and throw on the popper. That way you wont create another 10 minute job for yourself next time you want to use the jig rig. Its still there, all set up for whenever you want to use it again.
